Illicium verum
The warm, humid, subtropical climates of Guangxi and Yunnan are suitable for the growth of star anise. It is an evergreen tree which prefers fertile, well-drained soil. Once the fruit matures, it is harvested and oil is extracted through steam distillation. The resulting oil produced is aromatic and rich in anethole. It is valued for its sweet, spicy profile, and therapeutic properties and is widely used in perfumery, flavouring, traditional medicine, and antimicrobial formulations.
In April 2025, export volumes peaked while September experienced the lowest shipments. Overall, a quarter demand during this period originated from France, while Germany and Hong Kong made up another quarter. Significant demand was also recorded from Indonesia and USA, while Spain and UK had consistent but lower demand. There was minimal fluctuation in price during this period with June recording the highest price, while August the lowest.
