In the past Queensland Sandalwood - Santalum lanceolatum, was used for the production of oil, however it ceased early last century. Recently with the price rises seen of WA Sandalwood oil and Indian Sandalwood oil, new production of this oil has started on a limited basis.
The odour has the typical characteristics you’d expect to find with any sandalwood - sweet, woody and earthy but is more delicate that of West Australian (Santalum spicatum).
The Queensland government are fully supportive of the harvesting and processing of this wood so it has great potential to offer a sustainable supply solution along with its own unique characteristics for those looking for an alternative in this woody market.
