Mentha Arvensis
In India, mentha arvensis is primarily cultivated in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Bihar. It thrives in humid climates with stable temperatures and well-irrigated sandy loam soils. To acquire the oil, leaves and stems are steam-distilled and they produce a menthol-rich oil. It is used in oral care, balms, pharmaceuticals, cooling applications, flavourings, and isolates such as menthol crystals.
Unfavourable weather conditions like heavy mid-monsoon rainfall have impacted the supply of mentha arvensis. The market for the oil in India is under pressure as domestic production is insufficient to meet growing local demand. A major reason for this supply shortage is the influx of mislabeled synthetic menthol from overseas. Due to this fraudulent stock, natural oil prices have come down and farmers are moving towards alternative high-value crops. Despite the supply challenges, this is a great opportunity for buyers to stock authentic natural oils and isolates at favourable prices.
