Melissa Oil (Melissa officinalis)
Melissa thrives in fertile, well-drained loamy soils rich in organic matter and prefers exposure to the sun with mild temperatures and regular moisture. It is cultivated in smaller pockets across central and northern Bulgaria, where temperate continental climates support its growth. The crop is sensitive to frost and drought and requires careful management. In 2025, the first melissa harvest in Bulgaria yielded lower volumes than expected. Unfavourable weather conditions like spring frosts, excessive rain in April and May, followed by drought and high summer temperatures severely hampered growth. Farmers are increasingly shifting to alternative crops as production barely covers costs. Oil price is expected to increase in the coming months.
