Siberian fir flourishes in cold, boreal climates with moist, well-drained soils, found in Russia and the Eastern European highlands. The oil is extracted from freshly cut needles and twigs through steam distillation. The oil produced is prized for its crisp, coniferous, uplifting aroma. It is used in respiratory blends, aromatherapy, decongestant formulations, natural household cleaners, fresh-air fragrance accords, and spa wellness applications.

Fir needle oil is harvested from April to September. The market for the oil is tense in 2025 and supply is facing multiple challenges, especially when it comes to high-quality material. Several factors are affecting the supply at origin. These include high inflation, unfavourable exchange rate, rising raw material prices, and increased production costs. The price of oil is rising steadily due to these factors. With the producing regions facing economic pressures, the fir needle oil market is expected to remain firm through the season.
