Cuminum cyminum
Cumin is a flowering plant best suited to hot, dry climates with long summers. It thrives in sandy loam soils with good drainage and a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. India is the largest producer of cumin with largest cultivation areas in Rajasthan and Gujarat. Cumin oil is distilled from dried seeds and has a warm, earthy, spicy aroma with sharp undertones. It is widely used in the food industry, particularly in spice blends, sauces, and baked goods.
The cumin oil market in India is currently facing oversupply. Farmers are holding large carry-forward stocks in hopes of better prices. Domestic and global demand for Indian cumin is low. Cumin prices declined 25 percent due to the excess supply in the market.
