Black Spruce
Black spruce is one of the most common conifers of Canada’s boreal forests and grows best in acidic, nutrient poor
soils such as podzols and organic peat. It is widely distributed across the Boreal Shield ecozone, thriving in cool, humid climates with long, cold winters and short, moist summers. The species dominates wet lowlands, bogs, and upland forests in provinces like Quebec, Ontario, and Newfoundland. The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of needles and young branches. It produces a fresh, resinous, and woody aroma with grounding and clarifying qualities.
Black spruce oil is popular in aromatherapy for stress relief and respiratory support. Oil stocks are running low leading to an increase in price.
