Balsam fir
Balsam fir is a native Canadian conifer found across the boreal and mixed wood forests of Quebec, Ontario, and the Atlantic provinces. It prefers cool, humid climates with cold winters and grows best in acidic, well-drained podzolic soils or organic soils rich in humus. The oil is obtained through steam distillation of needles and twigs and has a sweet, balsamic aroma with fresh pine undertones.
Stocks of balsam fir organic oil are low, and prices remain high.
