Haiti is considered the world’s leading producer of high-quality vetiver oil. It is cultivated primarily in the Les Cayes region of southern Haiti, where the combination of climate, soil, and traditional cultivation methods yields an oil with superior fixative qualities compared to other origins. The plant thrives in well-drained sandy or loamy soils with high organic content and requires a warm tropical climate with moderate to high rainfall. The fibrous root system not only produces essential oil but also helps prevent soil erosion, making vetiver environmentally beneficial in Haiti’s mountainous terrain. The oil is obtained through steam distillation of roots that are harvested after 12–18 months of growth. Haitian vetiver is highly valued in luxury perfumery as a base note and fixative, lending depth and longevity to fragrances.

Market for vetiver oil is stable.
