Amyris balsamifera
Amyris balsamifera, often called West Indian sandalwood, is a small tree native to Haiti and the Caribbean. The tree adapts well to marginal land that is less suitable for traditional agriculture. Amyris trees require well-drained soil, abundant sunlight, and moderate rainfall. They thrive in areas with warm temperatures year-round. The essential oil is extracted from the wood, which must be aged and dried before steam distillation to release its characteristic soft, woody, and balsamic aroma. Amyris oil is often used as a sustainable, affordable alternative to true sandalwood in perfumery.
Due to the security concerns in the raw material growing areas, Amyris production is limited.
