Elettaria cardamomum
Cardamom grows best in moist, subtropical climates with high humidity and evenly distributed rainfall. It requires rich, loamy soils with good drainage. It is primarily cultivated in Western Ghats of Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. The oil is obtained by steam distillation from the seeds and pods. It has a warm, spicy, and sweet aroma. Cardamom oil is highly prized in the food and beverage industry for flavouring teas, baked goods, and confectionery.
Excessive rainfall in Kerala has delayed the start of harvest season with hilly fields being inaccessible to farmers. International demand has temporarily shifted to Indian cardamom following rain damage in Guatemala. There was a sharp decline in cardamom prices due to short-term holding by farmers. Though it rebounded quickly.
Price is expected to fall once the harvest season commences and farmers release stock.
