Juniper grows widely across Eastern Europe in upland and mountainous regions. It thrives in sandy, rocky, or loamy soils that are well-drained. The plant prefers sunny, cool conditions, often found in Carpathian and Balkan highlands. Once berries mature, they are collected and steam distilled to produce juniper berry oil. The product has a fresh, woody, and slightly balsamic aroma.
The main harvest period for juniper berries has not yet commenced. Market conditions will become clearer later in the season.
