Lemon Oil
Citrus limon (L.) Burm. F.
Harvest: November - July
Spain enters the latter part of the 2025/26 lemon season with a noticeably smaller crop. AILIMPO forecasts total production at approximately 1.027 million tonnes, down 18 percent from around 1.254 million tonnes in 2024/25. Total cultivated area remains broadly unchanged at around 50,000 hectares, meaning the reduction is primarily linked to lower yields rather than a major contraction in planted area.
Both principal varieties have been affected. Fino production is forecast to decline by around 15%, while the later Verna crop is expected to fall by approximately 25%. Adverse conditions during flowering and fruit set, unusually heavy spring rainfall and higher-than-normal June temperatures contributed to the lower crop potential. Despite these pressures, improved phytosanitary management has supported fruit quality and increased the proportion suitable for the fresh market.
This creates a tighter situation for processors. With a smaller crop and good-quality fruit being prioritised for fresh consumption, the volume available for juice and essential oil production is more restricted. Lower fruit availability also raises the raw-material cost per unit for processors, keeping pressure on lemon oil replacement values. For this season, attention is increasingly focused on the Verna portion of the crop and remaining industrial availability. Buyers looking for Spanish origin, full traceability and consistent analytical and sensory quality are likely to find less flexibility than in a normal production year. The market for Spanish lemon oil therefore remains firm, with limited scope for lower prices unless processing availability improves materially.
