Indonesia is steeped in history when it comes to coffee, in particular the Arabica type. Known as the ‘Mountain Coffee’ it is thought the Arabic bean was the first to be cultivated and exported to the world.
Around 100 years after the discovery of Arabica came the Robusta bean, which was formally recognised back in 1897. Both typically come from Sumatra although can also be found in parts of Aceh and Java.
Indonesia accounts for around 15% of the world production for these two types of beans.
